Beyond RULA and REBA: Assessment Scores Are a Starting Point, Not the Intervention

Ergonomic assessment tools are useful because they create structure. They are not a substitute for understanding the work.

A score is not a design recommendation

A posture score can help identify priority, but it does not tell an engineer which workstation dimension to change, a supervisor which part of a sequence creates the demand, or a procurement team which requirement belongs in the next specification. The value of the method comes from the decision it supports.

Context changes the meaning of exposure

The same posture may have very different implications depending on force, repetition, duration, recovery, reach, pace, variability and worker capability. Direct observation and discussion with workers are therefore necessary to understand what the score represents in actual operations.

Use methods as part of a wider analysis

RULA, REBA, ROSA, the NIOSH Lifting Equation and other tools each answer different questions. Method selection should follow the task and the decision rather than habit. In some projects, task decomposition, anthropometric review, push-pull assessment, video analysis or prototype evaluation may be more useful than another posture score.

Move up the control hierarchy

The strongest ergonomic intervention usually changes the work: working height, reach, load, tool, equipment, sequence, material flow, interface or organisation. Behavioural reminders and training can support a well-designed task but rarely compensate for a fundamentally poor design.

Validate the redesigned task

A recommendation should be tested under real working conditions. Did the new layout actually reduce the demanding reach? Did the trolley lower push force without creating manoeuvring problems? Did the intervention transfer demand to another body region or another worker? Verification closes the loop between assessment and design.
